Description

When I found out that I’d be watching and reviewing Not Today, I was really excited because its themes of poverty, human trafficking and humanitarianism are extremely dear to my heart. Even it tagline – “none of us are free if one of us is enslaved” – struck me deeply – it’s almost a motto that I live by. Not Today is an honest and action-packed movie that both will touch your heart and captivate your emotions.

Not Today tells the story of a spoiled young man, Caden, who is running from God. When Caden decides to take a pleasure trip to party it up in India, God intervenes in a way that changes Caden forever. On his first night in India, Caden meets a man and his daughter who are starving to death, but Caden refuses to give them money or to help them in any way. When the man unknowingly sells his daughter to a brothel, Caden finds himself on a journey to rescue her – a journey that brings him back into the arms of an all-loving God, and opens his eyes to the scarring world of human trafficking.

Not Today is beyond excellent – it provides a truthful gaze at the injustice that still exists in today’s world. I appreciated that the movie wasn’t graphic, despite the graphic nature of the topic. The characters were so easy to relate to, and their struggles were so believable and real. My only complaints? The subtitles (for the parts of the movie spoken in Hindi) were far too artistic and hard to read, which was distracting, and Caden’s relationship with his girlfriend was noticeably forced. That aside, I honestly couldn’t look away from the screen for the whole movie! Not Today is absolutely worth watching: it will inspire you to change the world… and remind you that with God’s help, you can.

Motiv/Inspir-ational September 4, 2013

I loved the plot line between Audrey & Caden! For a couple that doesn't interact with each other in person for 90% of the movie their scenes were always adorable, enhanced the main plot rather than distracting from it (highlighting Caden's character development, personality and values). The cute little Anikka played by Persis Karen had minor lines but each one had powerful meaning packed in them of innocence, simplicity of life from a child's precious perspective, not understanding racism towards her for doing nothing but being a Dalit, and invoking a desire -in the main character-to protect her innocence after realizing the possibilities of her fate. The theme that resounds with Anikka is the verse from Matt 18:3-5 "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."

Not Today August 30, 2013

One of those movies that, through conflicting feelings touches your life in a way that you know needs to become more aware of these issues and appreciative of our own circumstances here in Canada; and yet at the same time, can be heart-wrenching and make us want to avoid it because of how unbearable and unbelievable the significant role of Human Trafficking and Modern Day slavery takes in our World today. Yet at the end it doesn't leave you feeling guilty for not doing more - to assist people under these circumstances- as many films of this genre tend to do, but it does provide you with resources to get involved if you want.
This film takes on the difficult task of taking someone else's circumstances that may seem abstract, and transforming it into a personal experience with emotions  and feelings that anyone can find easy to relate to. Which is one of the most endearing attributes of this film.I would definitely recommend it.
